This website focuses primarily on two Taoist temples: the Beijing Dong Yue temple and the Hong Kong Wong Tai Sin temple. Both temples are used as rituals sites to conduct sacrificial rites or offerings to the deities hosted in the temples. However, people’s uses of these two temples differ, and to some extent, transform these spaces according to a more secularized discourse of religious practices.

This website has three main objectives:

  1. To provide a brief history of these two temples, as well as their functions in contemporary time.
  2. To provide images of these two temples so that users can, to some extent, better locate themselves within the temples and understand how people use these two sites.
  3. To compare and contrast different uses of these two temples and to examine the continuity and discontinuity of religious practices.
