Olivia Box: Graduate School in Natural Resources and Forest Ecology

I’ve always been interested in conservation and ecology, and through the biology and environmental studies departments at Hamilton I was able to dive deeper into these topics. While at Hamilton I spent summers in Maine, Germany, and Massachusetts working on various forest ecology and conservation-oriented projects. My views of ecosystem grew, and I decided to pursue graduate school in hopes of developing further research skills in the conservation field.

In 2018 I joined a forest ecology lab at the University of Vermont as a master’s student. I’m studying the impacts of Asian longhorned beetle and associated eradication measures on forests in southeastern New England. My research combines fieldwork, climate modeling, and data analysis. I’m currently working on my first paper, and I hope to make these findings accessible to the public through extension outreach.

Designing and implanting a thesis while at Hamilton was the best preparation I could have gotten for graduate school. I’m most grateful for our lab group morale in Andrea’s lab—we learned from each other’s research and had a great support system.
