The Rules of Oz

When we were discussing the comparisons between The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Through the Looking Glass, my mind turned to the conversation we were having on Monday about games and play. When Alice enters Wonderland for the second time, she is completely unaware that there is a game being played there, and therefore unaware of the rules that are in place. This leads her to have conflicting ideas about the social interactions with the other characters. However despite the fantastical nature of the world of Oz, the rules of the world do not stray from those of the “real” world. Dorothy’s interactions with the Scarecrow are completely normal, and she treats each and every new interaction as if it were just an ordinary person. There is no dramatic change with the rules of the world and therefore with Dorothy’s “game”.
