In and Out of Oz

What I found to be most interesting about the original cinematic production of the story was the fact that with the introduction of the Scarecrow prior to the cyclone, the question of what is real and what is not is called into question. In the traditional story, the storm can be considered to be the, putting on of the headset, as it were, in terms of crossing the threshold into a fantastic reality. This represents the transition into the reality where anything is possible. Animals and objects talk, magic dictates the land, and houses fall out of the sky. In the cinematic version, the anthropomorphic Scarecrow is just as present as the protagonist. This suggests that there is no boundary between the real and non-real and that once we have entered into this world, there is no alternative that can be escaped to.
