Sitter: Henry Hastings Curran was born on September 27, 1841 in Utica, NY. He attended the Utica Free Academy and proceeded to enroll in Hamilton College. In June 1861, he left the College with a group of friends to raise a company of volunteers and fight in the Civil War. In 1962, at the urging of his friends, he returned to Hamilton to finish his degree. Following his graduation, he fought in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, before being shot through the heart and instantly killed in the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864.
