Unfurling: Max Scheidl ’21

un·furl/ˌənˈfərl/ verb

make or become spread out from a rolled or folded state, especially in order to be open to the wind.

My goal in this project was to isolate the abstract beauty of simple entropy and further emphasize the tri-color process. Not only are the products visually captivating, they are intended to connect to a larger theme at hand: the unfurling and spreading of the COVID-19 outbreak. Despite causing global fear and confusion, nature is beautiful and humans can often fail to recognize that simple fact. By photographing the process of unfurling in largely decontextualized environments, I am attempting to capture the beauty of natural spreading patterns. Nonetheless, the precise manner in which my subjects unfurl is seemingly random and out of my control, similar to the spread of COVID-19. The camera I used for this project was my iPhone XR.
