Cyanotypes: Isabelle Mosbarger ’20

What first piqued my interest about the cyanotype process were the photogram cyanotypes that incorporated hands in some shape or form. The photograms that were partially obstructed by a hand—or multiple—completely changed in composition. To me, it felt as though the hands were staple to the original cyanotype process, so I wanted to attempt to incorporate hands into my project in some way. My mind went straight to the force and power that the male figure has over the female and how the physical manifestation of that was physical control. The sentiment radiated domestic and sexual violence. I thought about how I could incorporate this factor in an alternative way in order to communicate the control over the female while abstracting the male identity. The product of this experiment is as follows; a series of cyanotypes depicting the explicit oppression of the female.
