Coming Soon… Xan Mullings ’20

Coming soon…is a photo series of race-based advertisements that attempt to call attention to the black experience in America. This project was a reimaging of the country if there was more acknowledgment of its racist beginnings and the ways that racism still runs rampant to this day.  The process of gel transfer only continued to aide my narrative. With this process, I was able to show a possibility of how media would change if we were more blatant about casual racism, biases, stereotypes, inequalities, etc. I definitely don’t want to live in a world where one can buy a token black friend for three easy payments of $139.99, but I do want to live in a world where I can turn on my tv and see more than one person who looks like me. I don’t want to live in a world that gives out free passes to say the n-word but I do want a world where people can understand why it shouldn’t be said without having to debate about it. Racism is complicated and messy and there will never be a quick and easy fix but I think being able to have these uncomfortable discussions is a good place to start. My hope is that my audience doesn’t just look at my images and move on. I hope that at least one ad speaks to every viewer and can be used as a jumping-off point for starting some of those discussions.
