Using Adobe Illustrator

It was extremely satisfying to see the image my partner and I created in last weeks digital workshop printed out on paper in class. Something about seeing the image moveĀ from the computer screen onto the paper was very rewarding and inspired me to play with adobe illustrator while I was working in the library today. My second experience with adobe illustrator was fun, however, it brought to my attention how difficult it is to work with the program if you do not have any immediate access to help. I watch the tutorials on blackboard and several on youtube but I was unable to be as productive as I was during the initial class. It helped me realize how complex the illustrator program is, and how one would need an entire course built around learning the program to understand how to navigate without concern. I really want to use the adobe illustrator program for part of my final project but I realize that I am going to need a lot of practice if I want to produce the image I envision.

  1. I certainly share the same sentiment, and I also believe that it extends to many other programs. I was actually recently discussing the utility of Microsoft Excel with one of my friends. It is a very hard program to navigate if you have limited experience with it, but once you warm up to the features it is an extraordinarily powerful tool. As a science major, my exposure to Excel has allowed me to become proficient, but I have very limited experience with programs like Illustrator and Photoshop. Like you mentioned, I can see how useful these programs are, but I am so far from actually being able to effectively use them. We live in an age where there is a useful program for almost anything you can imagine. Unfortunately, I think that most people don’t have a good understanding of how most of these programs work. Even a simple word processing software is filled with features that make typing and formatting so much easier that many people do not know how to use. Perhaps an increased emphasis on digital arts in the education system would benefit future generations.
