Anyone Else Excited?

In the past, historiated initials often contained biblical scenes, depictions of famous figures and self-portraits. Often, these images were meant to help a reader conceptualize the terms presented in a text and to invoke an emotional response which in turn would spur them to prayer. On occasion, historiated letters served as simple place-markers, helping readers to find a specific part of the text without having to read through it in its entirety.

Anyways, as you can probably guess from the title, I’m super duper excited to finally get to do some hands-on illumination! I’m really not sure what letter to do though, and I don’t know how much thought all of you are putting into it. I’ve consolidated my research on the historical historiated initial in the previous paragraph and I’m hoping to get some inspiration browsing through pictures, but I think it’s hard to come up with a good idea for a historiated letter without a supporting text, which is the case in our situation.

So, what letters are you guys going to do and why? I’d really like to hear your thoughts and ideas 🙂

A Question for You Guys

Last class someone (sorry I’m not good with names or faces) brought up the idea of the Middle Eastern illuminated manuscript being influenced by Asian, specifically Chinese and Japanese art and vice versa; however, I’m at a loss as to what specific influences Middle Eastern art has had on those cultures’ arts, especially Japanese art, since Japan was a distant, mostly isolationist (even exchange with China was limited) island. If anyone could point me in the right direction towards some examples or historical references, those would be greatly appreciated 🙂

P.S. Can someone tell me if this class is writing intensive? Because you people are writing a LOT on these blog posts.

Illuminati Manuscript

Illuminati = 9,12,12,21,13,9,14,1,20,9

9+12+12+21+13+9+14+1+20+9 = 120

120 = 1,2,0

This illuminated manuscript has one archway (1) containing two main figures (2) with haloes in the shape of zeros (0). Coincidence? I THINK NOT! ILLUMINATI MANUSCRIPT CONFIRMED.

In all seriousness though, this page is from a French book of hours. The scene itself is the Annunciation, in which the angel Gabriel tells the Virgin Mary that she will be the mother of Jesus.

What really caught my attention in this illumination was the intricate and symmetric floral detailing, and I really wanted to share it with you guys –I thought you might like it since we just watched The Secret of Kells.

So what does everyone think of my theory? 😀
