The revival at Qufu introduced an expanded role for women in Confucian rites and practices. Women have been given a variety of roles in ceremonies ranging from local female officials acting as participants to female students taking on equivalent roles to their male counterparts. As the photographs above show, the women are performing alongside the men in this celebration of the birthday of Confucius. Another expansion for the role of women includes the inclusion of women from the Kong lineage into ancestral events, like the 2009 Spring Ancestral Rites in Qufu. The inclusion of women also exists on the level of personal rites with a roughly equal number of men and women participating in prayers.
