The 2019 ceremony (Figure 6.1) is the annual performance of a ceremony recreated in 1970 by the ROC. In 1968, the ROC commissioned a detailed study of traditional Han-dynasty rituals and hoped to recreate them in Taipei. The goal behind the commission was to strive to be as accurate as possible, paying close attention to costumes, instruments, and ritual utensils. This ceremony consists of thirty seven steps with most of the steps detailing how to sacrifice to the spirit of Confucius. The core idea behind this ceremony is to invite the spirit of Confucius into the temple and venerate him.
